difference of two squares – two perfect squares separated by a subtraction sign (x2 – 9) = (x+3)(x-3)
surface area – the sum of all the areas of faces, sides, and surfaces of a three dimensional figure
system of equations – two or more equations with the same variables
unit cost – the cost of one unit of an item

2. variable – symbols used to represent unspecified numbers
vertex – the maximum or minimum point on a parabola
vertical angles – two nonadjacent angles formed by intersecting lines
volume – the measure of the amount of space enclosed by a three-dimensional figure

3. whole number – the set of numbers represented by {…0,1,2,3,4…}
vertical axis – the vertical line in a graph that represents the dependent variable
