Cellular Physiology TRANSPORT

Passive Membrane Process
Movement of molecules without energy. (no energy involves)

A. Diffusion The movement of molecules from a higher concentration to a lower concentration. (no energy involved) (flower)

B. Facilitated Diffusion
High → Low Diffusion helped by a carrier molecule No Energy For Big stuff like glucose

C. Osmosis The movement of water through a membrane towards the higher solute concentration. (Goes where there is less water)

Osmosis 1. Hypertonic: More strength of solute outside of Cell. Higher concentration of water inside the cell then outside. Water moves outside the cell, causing the cell to shrink.

Osmosis 2. Hypotonic: Less strength of solute outside the cell. There’s a higher concentration outside the cell then inside, so water moves into the cell causing it to swell.

3. Isotonic: Equal strength of solute and water outside & inside of cell.

Quiz yourself

D. Filtration Water + molecules = forced across membrane because of pressure.
