Recap What is Learning? 1 thing you learnt 1 thing you are unsure of 1/14/2019

3 Pedagogy – the science or art of teaching Wordia definition
Pedagogy of the Oppressed (1970) – Paulo Freire, Brazilian Social Activist and Teacher Freire calls traditional pedagogy the "banking model" because it treats the student as an empty vessel to be filled with knowledge, Freire argues for a pedagogy that works alongside students to them develop their own learning Pedagog A teacher A person who is pedantic , dogmatic, overly formal 1/14/2019

4 Andragogy Term has its origins in 19th Century but Malcolm Knowles (1970) popularised the modern understanding of the term as the art and science of helping adults learn 1/14/2019

5 Heutagogy is the study of self-determined learning
Emphasis on HOW to learn as well as WHAT you learn. Consider… How can you help learners be independent from you as a teacher?

9 Assignment PGDip Part 1 (60%) Essay (2500 words)
Critically appraise the role and responsibilities of a teacher, including planning and assessment, with reference to current or future teaching practice. Guidance: Provide examples of a range of assessment tools and your own planning in relation to your appraisal of practice.

10 First can you peer assess this teacher……..

11 Feedback What feedback would you give this teacher….. What if you were told this was his first ever teaching session…… What if you were told it was his eighth and final observation within a teacher training course?

15 What is Assessment? Assessment is making Judgements about…….
Skills and knowledge Potential and Progress Who are making the judgements Examiners Teachers Students

16 Some Quotes………. “Assessment makes teaching into teaching. Mere presentation—without assessment of what the learners have made of what you have offered them—is not teaching.” ATHERTON J S (2010) Learning and Teaching; Assessment [On-line] UK: Available: http :// Accessed: 5 October 2010 “Assessment procedures to gauge student learning should be as varied as the teaching strategies used to teach them.” Read more at Suite101: What is Assessment: Assessing Student Learning

14/01/2019 Purposes of Assessment: Why do it? Task Consider these questions after reading the statements: To what extent do you agree with the statements? (rate each on a scale from 0 to 10) What are the implications of each statement for teachers Devise a statement of your own which summarises the purpose and importance of assessment 640 Edwin Starr KES Certificate HE

18 Purposes: Race (2001) The lecturer’s toolkit
Bradford College PCET Assessment 1 14/01/2019 Purposes: Race (2001) The lecturer’s toolkit To diagnose faults and support progression To give us feedback on how our learners are progressing and how our teaching is going To guide improvement and motivate students To provide statistics for the course, or for the institution To enable grading, exam classifications and final degree classifications To add variety to students’ learning experience, and add direction to our teaching 6.55 KES Certificate HE

19 Categories or Types of Assessment
Initial Diagnostic Formative Summative Whole group: What do you think these terms mean and what activities fall under these categories break

20 Initial and Diagnostic
Initial assessment can screen students, identify support needs or simply benchmark a learner’s skills, knowledge and understanding at the start of a programme. Diagnostics should take this on into the programme giving further insight into skills, knowledge and understanding throughout the programme.

21 Bradford College PCET Assessment 1
14/01/2019 Diagnostic Methods Task: As a table…… Come up with some as many diagnostic questions as you can, drawing on your specialism, that you can use at the start of a session. KES Certificate HE

22 Summative (Assessment of Learning)
Summative assessment is performed at the end (of unit, term, year or sometimes one session) to check on learning. Summative assessment methods tend to be more formal and include…… Exams Oral questions Demonstration of skills Observation Assignment Computer based questions Project Others?

23 Bradford College PCET Assessment 1
14/01/2019 Summative - types Norm-referenced e.g. selection tests, school SATS, IQ tests (old O and A-levels) Compares students with each other and rewards the best Criterion-referenced e.g. GCSE, driving test Compares students with set criteria and awards grade (or simply pass or fail - Competency based) Ipsative e.g. ILP’s, Sport, Compares students with own previous performance Norm referenced - Marks all candidates on a comparative scale-compares their performance with others in the group. external exams – aim is to maintain standards Assumes performances in any year fit a normal distribution curve - small % pass and get As and most get between 40 and 60%. Adjusts raw results to fit the normal distribution curve: creates a quote of results in each grade. Result may depend on how able/weak’ their cohort is. Assumes a conformity of ability in successive cohorts. Criterion referenced – mastery learning – master one topic before moving on to the next. Criteria – objectives and competences - Measures what each candidate can do All those who can performance at required level(s) achieve a Pass or the appropriate grade so all candidates could achieve ‘A’ grades No quotas in grades or limit on numbers who may pass. ie Driving Test Norm–reference and criterion reference assessment can be mixed. ie Norm reference structures set grade boundaries and criterion reference standards set the grade requirement. See CPD handbook and PCET unit Competence based - work-based skills: analysis of skills needed to performance in an occupational area. (NVQs) Elements of Competence’ used to create units that fit together to form an Award - candidates must demonstrate competence in all the required elements Can be retaken until competence achieved Usually Pass/Fail: no ‘grades’ of competence and focus on behavioural skills What method do you use? Is it appropriate? Is it the best / only way? KES Certificate HE

24 Formative (Assessment for Learning)
Developmental and ongoing assessments. We use these methods constantly. Formative assessment methods tend to be more informal and may include………. Oral questions Log-books/ journals/ self evaluations Questions & Answers Observation Written questions – worksheets Demonstration Roleplay Monitored Individual and group activities Simulation Others?

25 Assessment for Learning
Inside the black box (1998) is a summary of the main findings arising from 250 assessment articles (covering nine years of international research) studied by Paul Black and Dylan Wiliam. Its findings still provide a touchstone for other researchers, advisers and teachers. Assessment for Learning is the approach to formative assessment which has developed from this……

26 Defining Assessment for Learning? (A4L)
“The process teachers and learners use to decide: where learners are in their learning where they need to go how best to get there.” Paul Black Co-author of “Inside the Black Box.”, “Working inside the Black Box.” and “ Assessment for Learning: Putting it into Practice.”

27 Bradford College PCET Assessment 1
14/01/2019 Formative assessment Is designed to provide learners with feedback on progress and informs development, but does not necessarily contribute to the overall assessment KES Certificate HE

28 Formative assessment Involves
Sharing learning goals and standards with students Feedback that helps pupils to identify how to improve Reviewing and reflecting together Self-assessment Increasing motivation and self-esteem, crucial for effective learning and progress, by effective assessment techniques. Adapted from: Assessment for Learning Strategy Download

29 What about our video clip of a teacher shown earlier…….
In your feedback did you indicate…. where he was with his teaching where he needed to go how best to get there If you did you were apply the principles of A4L

30 Peer and self assessment
Peer and self-assessment have an important role in A4L. Key elements are... Students using the assessment criteria to assess and set own targets for improvement. Students make comments about their own strengths and weaknesses before hearing/receiving other people's views . Teachers and others demonstrating examples of what is required. (Did I hear someone say “modelling”?)

31 Models of assessment Classical model Exams and unseen tests
Liberal model Continuous assessment and perhaps student devised assessment Objectives model Performance activity with pass/fail outcomes

32 Evaluating methods Complete the table – If you finish early:
send an ‘ambassador’ to see what other tables have got and feed back to your group B) Add two more of your own at the bottom of the table

33 Micro-teach 20mins Lesson plan required Start – Middle – End
Student Activity Peer reviews Tutor Feedback Hand in for the assignment A reflection, all feedback, session plans and materials
