5 Dharmachakra Dharmachakra is a Buddhist symbol that represents the teachings of the Buddha.

6 Life of the Buddha 1.) Buddha was born a Prince called Siddhartha Gautama in a palace. 2.) Never went outside the palace as the King was advised that if he did, he would grow up to be a Holy man and not a King. 3.) One day, Siddhartha escaped the palace on horse back. He came across the four sights: ‘blind man, poor man, dead man, holy man’. 4.) Siddhartha starved himself in order to achieve Enlightenment, but it didn’t work. 5.) Buddha then meditated under the fig tree and found Enlightenment. This video shows you the order of the Life of the Buddha.

7 Four sights Ill man Dead man Old man Holy man

8 The four noble truths 1.) Dukkha – acceptance that life involves suffering. 2.) Origin of suffering is desire (tanha) 3.) Nothing lasts forever – nothing is permanent. 4.) To stop suffering and desire, follow the eightfold path.

9 Festivals In the assessment, you need to be able to describe one festival in detail. The Elephant festival is celebrated on the 3rd Saturday in the month of November. The elephant festival lasts for two days. As many as 200 elephants are used and the animals perform several tricks to entertain the crowd Wesak is the most important of the Buddhist festivals and is celebrated on the full moon in May. It celebrates the Buddha's birthday. In many countries during the festival, Buddhists will visit their local temple for services and teaching, and will give offerings to the monks of food, candles and flowers.

10 Life of a monk Monk – a Buddhist Holy person. Meditates, prays and reads sacred texts in order to achieve Enlightenment.

12 Enlightenment Achieving an inner peace and the stopping of suffering. Achieving a ‘supreme consciousness’.

13 5 precepts Avoid harming living things To take only when offered
Avoid improper sexual activity (having affairs, rape) Avoid improper speech (lies and gossiping) Avoid alcohol and drugs The 5 precepts are followed by Buddhist monks as an extra set of rules for Buddhists monks to live by.

14 Applying the five precepts, what do you think Buddhist monks would say about:
Eating meat? Drinking lots of vodka? Picking up a £10 note from the floor? Talking about a strange person they saw earlier?

15 ‘If everyone followed the five precepts there would be no problems in the world’
Writing framework: Some people may agree with this statement because… On the other hand, some people may disagree because… A Buddhist monk might think… To conclude, in my opinion…

16 Traffic lights Can describe what alms is. Could describe the life of a Buddhist monk. Could describe the five precepts.
