1 Fast Transition Report
Month Year September 2005 September 2005 Fast Transition Report Authors: Date: Notice: This document has been prepared to assist IEEE It is offered as a basis for discussion and is not binding on the contributing individual(s) or organization(s). The material in this document is subject to change in form and content after further study. The contributor(s) reserve(s) the right to add, amend or withdraw material contained herein. Release: The contributor grants a free, irrevocable license to the IEEE to incorporate material contained in this contribution, and any modifications thereof, in the creation of an IEEE Standards publication; to copyright in the IEEE’s name any IEEE Standards publication even though it may include portions of this contribution; and at the IEEE’s sole discretion to permit others to reproduce in whole or in part the resulting IEEE Standards publication. The contributor also acknowledges and accepts that this contribution may be made public by IEEE Patent Policy and Procedures: The contributor is familiar with the IEEE 802 Patent Policy and Procedures < ieee802.org/guides/bylaws/sb-bylaws.pdf>, including the statement "IEEE standards may include the known use of patent(s), including patent applications, provided the IEEE receives assurance from the patent holder or applicant with respect to patents essential for compliance with both mandatory and optional portions of the standard." Early disclosure to the Working Group of patent information that might be relevant to the standard is essential to reduce the possibility for delays in the development process and increase the likelihood that the draft publication will be approved for publication. Please notify the Chair as early as possible, in written or electronic form, if patented technology (or technology under patent application) might be incorporated into a draft standard being developed within the IEEE Working Group. If you have questions, contact the IEEE Patent Committee Administrator at Qi, Walker, Sood, Intel Emily Qi, Intel Corporation

2 Month Year September 2005 September 2005 Abstract This document proposes a Fast Transition Information Request/Report mechanism for the current AP to advertise its neighbor TAPs’ service and policy information. The purpose of the Transition AP Report is to assist a TSTA to decide which transition mechanisms to use. Qi, Walker, Sood, Intel Emily Qi, Intel Corporation

3 September 2005 Motivation TGr proposes the Transition Resource IE (TRIE) with 17 octets, Transition Security IE (TSIE) with 48 octets, Key Holder IE (KHIE) with (16*n) octets, to enable the advertisements Avoid off-channel scan to get this static information in probes. TSTA benefits from this information even before scanning Including such long length IEs in Beacon frame will overburden Beacon frame. Qi, Walker, Sood, Intel

4 September 2005 Proposal Current AP to advertise the Transition Policy and Service Information elements: TRIE, TSIE, KHIE, for Its neighbor APs, or A specific target TAP, as per TSTA request Current AP can send the Fast Transition Report autonomously or as a response to a TSTA’s request Two approaches: Option #1: TGr extends TGk’s Neighbor Report to support this feature Option #2: TGr defines new Action frames for Fast Transition Information Request and Fast Transition Information Report Qi, Walker, Sood, Intel

5 Rationale for Option #2 Eliminate the dependency on TGk
September 2005 Rationale for Option #2 Eliminate the dependency on TGk TGk’s neighbor report (if available) contains information on APs which the STA may use as candidates for a BSS transition Cleanly designed to support Fast Transitions TGr’s Fast Transition Information Report contains target TAP’s service and policy for Fast Transition Qi, Walker, Sood, Intel

6 Proposed Fast Transition Information Report IE
September 2005 Proposed Fast Transition Information Report IE Order Size (octets) Description 1 Element ID:TBD 2 Length 3 6 BSSID 4 19 Transition Resource IE (TRIE) 5 50 Transition Security IE (TSIE) 16*n Key Holder IE (KHIE) – n is number of R0 Key Holders Qi, Walker, Sood, Intel

7 Proposed Fast Transition Information Request
September 2005 Proposed Fast Transition Information Request Order Size (octets) Description 1 Category 2 Action 3 Dialog Token 4 Number of BSSIDs (n1) 5 6*n1 BSSID-List If Number of BSSID  0, then respond with specified AP’s info else send information for all neighboring APs Qi, Walker, Sood, Intel

8 Proposed Fast Transition AP Information Report
September 2005 Proposed Fast Transition AP Information Report Order Size (octets) Description 1 Category 2 Action 3 Dialog Taken 4 Variable List of (Fast Transition Information Report IEs) Qi, Walker, Sood, Intel

9 September 2005 Straw-Poll “Interest in pursuing this approach for advertising fast transition policy and service IEs” Qi, Walker, Sood, Intel

10 September 2005 Feedback? Qi, Walker, Sood, Intel
