2 Capitalization! Capitalize the first word of a sentence.
Capitalize the pronoun “I” whenever it appears in a sentence. Examples: Turn left at the corner. I never thought that I would see you again. If I leave, you can take my place.

3 Capitalization! A noun is a person, place, or thing. There are two kinds of nouns: common and proper. Common nouns refer to members of a group of people or things. They are NOT capitalized. Examples of common nouns: girl boy building holiday company

4 Capitalization! Proper nouns refer to a particular person, place, or thing. They ARE capitalized. Examples of proper nouns: Nilda Harold Empire State Building Easter King Corporation

5 Capitalization! Capitalize a person’s title when it is used with the person’s name as part of a proper noun. Do not capitalize a person’s title when it is not followed by the person’s name. Examples: My uncle will be visiting with us. My Uncle Larry will be visiting with us. The senator is running for reelection. Senator Michaels is running for reelection.

6 Capitalization! Titles of books, magazines, and newspapers may be keyed in one of two ways: In all capital letters: I read SOCKS THE CAT Or, underlined: *I read Socks the Cat. *Notice in the underlined example, all important words are capitalized.

7 Capitalization! Do not capitalize seasons of the year. Examples:
I look forward to summer. Jerry is shopping for winter clothes.

8 Capitalization! Do not capitalize words such as north, south, east, west, northwestern, southeastern, etc. when they are used to tell a direction or location. Capitalize these words when they refer to regions of the country or world, or when they are used as proper nouns. Walk south on South Street to reach the library. The South is noted for its gracious hospitality.

9 Capitalization! Capitalize the first word in all names and titles.
Example: Mrs. Laskey Dr. Rogers, Mr. Wilson

10 Capitalization! Capitalize the first word in a salutation and a complimentary close. Examples: Dear Carmen Ladies and Gentlemen To Whom it May Concern Very truly yours Sincerely yours Yours very truly
