5 Weird stuff about the Spanish alphabet to an English speaker
The Spanish language has 27 letters (that’s 26 like English plus the “ñ”) and 3 consonant clusters/digraphs (ch, ll, rr). The vowels (a,e,i,o, and u) always make the same sound. “A” sounds like the “a” in “father” “E” sounds like the “ay” in “bay” “I” sounds like the “ee” in “feet” “O” sounds like the “o” in “go”, but shorter “U” sounds like the “oo” in “boot”

6 Odd consonant sounds The “h” (hache) in Spanish is ALWAYS SILENT.
The “ñ” (eñe) sounds like the “ny” in “canyon”. The “j” (jota) sounds like the English letter “h”. In some dialects it’s harsher and sounds almost like the “ch” sound in German. The double “l” (elle) sounds like either an English letter “y” or almost like the “z” in “azure”, depending on the dialect (though the former is more common). The single “r” (ere) is about halfway between an English “r” and an English “d”. The double “r” (erre) is rolled at the tip of the tongue.

7 “B” (be) and “V” (ve/uve) are pronounced almost identically, erring on the side of the “b” sound in English. “CH” (che) is pronounced like the “ch’s” in “church”. “Q” (cu) is pronounced like the letter “K” in English. Like English, the letters “C” (ce) and “G” (ge) have hard sounds before a, o, and u and a soft sound before e and i. Spanish hard “C”= the “c” in “cat” Spanish soft “C”= the English letter “s” Spanish hard “G”= the “g” in “goat” Spanish soft “G”=the English letter “H” (pronounced also like “J/jota”)

8 Accent (on vowel)= con acento Ex. É= “E con acento”
SPECIAL SYMBOLS @=arroba .=punto Accent (on vowel)= con acento Ex. É= “E con acento”
