1 walk-in Explain three ways the ozone layer protects life on earth.
Take out notebook, folder, pencil box. Answer in sentences: Explain three ways the ozone layer protects life on earth.

2 Answer Ozone protects life on earth by:
Absorbing most harmful UV radiation in the stratosphere. Decreasing the incidence of sunburn, skin cancer and eye diseases (like cataracts). Maintaining the right amount of heat and sunlight for crops and plants to grow.

3 Study guide for atmosphere unit
Know the meaning of each word, be able to apply them in essay situations. Today: The Greenhouse Effect and Climate Change Tomorrow: Practice questions and review activity. Thursday/Friday: Atmosphere test

4 The Greenhouse effect

5 meteorology The science of studying the atmosphere, especially forecasting the weather and climate in an area.

6 Weather vs. climate Weather is day to day conditions, like temperature, rainfall, winds, humidity, etc. Climate is weather patterns over a long period of time, like a season or a number of years.

7 Is it weather or climate? Write W or C in your notebook.
The high on June 24, 2017 was 120 degrees. Yesterday, we got 0.5 inches of rain. This winter has been warmer than it usually is. California had a drought for three years. The wind speed was 35 miles per hour during a storm on Feb. 15, We may have a very dry summer this year because of low snowfall in the winter. Flagstaff is much cooler than Phoenix. The Sonoran Desert gets an average of 7 inches of rain each year.

8 Climate change Scientists have noticed climates may be changing around the world, possibly due to human actions causing the greenhouse effect to warm up the earth.

9 greenhouse Glass house that lets sunlight in, but traps some of the heat inside. Keeps plants warm.

10 Video clip Watch this video clip to understand how our atmosphere can act like a greenhouse!

11 Greenhouse effect Carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere acts as a “blanket” or glass, to reflect the sun’s rays back to earth and warm the earth to a good temperature for life. Make a diagram

12 Climate change may occur
Problem: Humans burning fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas release too much CO2 into the atmosphere, so more heat is reflected and trapped. Concern: The earth may be warming up, which can cause ice caps to melt, sea levels to rise, and extreme weather to occur.

13 Possible solutions Reduce amount of CO2 emissions (from cars, smokestacks, burning trash, etc.). Plant more trees, since they need CO2 for photosynthesis. Find other sources of energy that do not require us to burn carbon-based fuels.

14 Another look at the greenhouse effect
