1 Air Pressure and Wind

2 Air Pressure— Measure of the pressure exerted by a parcel of air
Air pushes in all directions Greater at sea level decreases as elevation increases Cold air = high pressure Denser than warm air; Sinks and means clear skies Warm air = low pressure Less dense and will rise above cooler air Rising air is associated with clouds and precipitation Earth heats unevenly, causing areas of different air pressure Air moves from areas of high pressure to low pressure creating wind

3 Wind Caused by parcels of air moving from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure Bigger differences in high and low pressure the stronger the winds (think hurricane and tornado) Summary: How does air pressure impact air stability? Predict the weather you can expect with stable air and unstable air What clouds and precipitation would be associated with that air. Ticket out door (on the index card) Define adiabatic what is the difference between wet and dry adiabatic rates?

4 Air Stability the Weather Maker
Describe how air stability is determined. Page 479 How does air stability affect Daily Weather? Page How does air pollution affect air stability? Page
