2 Definition A verb expresses an action, a condition, or a state of being

3 Types Two main types of verbs are ACTION,LINKING, and AUXILLARY verbs

4 Action Verbs Expresses action. This action could be physical or mental. The band marches onto the field. (Physical) The audience expects a great performance. (Mental)

5 Linking Verbs Links the subject of a sentence to a word in the predicate. There are two groups of linking verbs: forms of “to be” (is, are, etc) and verbs that express a condition The instruments are safe in the bus. The students seemed bored during the trip.

6 Auxiliary Verbs Also called helping verbs are combined with other verbs to form verb phrases The stadium is filled to capacity. We should save a seat for Jeff.

7 Practice We visited my aunt’s house last week.
The ant is red in this light. Everyone will stay on the parade route until it is over.
