1 II - BACKGROUND & MOTIVATION IV - ANTICIPATED OUTCOMES
Characterization and Modeling of Wireless Local Area Network Traffic Allan Alfonso Steve Kestell Eric Wong University of British Columbia Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Radio Science Lab III - METHODOLOGY Poll data at two minute intervals to determine inbound traffic, outbound traffic, and number of users at over 200 access points Parse raw data using PERL scripts into a useable form Analyze and graph data using excel. Categorize AP’s in each building as residential, office, academic, and public areas to help identify differences between types of network usage. I - OBJECTIVES Collect traffic and usage data for UBC WLAN Generate a mathematical model of UBC WLAN using traffic and usage data Formulate conclusions based on the mathematical model and generated graphs II - BACKGROUND & MOTIVATION Expand upon previous WLAN studies performed at Stanford, Dartmouth, MIT, and UC Davis. Gain knowledge of traffic patterns on a large production WLAN to facilitate automated channel assignment Provide information for network architects to build scalable wireless networks and anticipate growth IV - ANTICIPATED OUTCOMES Find patterns in traffic data and network usage depending on time of day, day of week Discover network load patterns between different building categories Determine which parts of campus have the busiest AP’s
