The young Jesuit Priest Father Paul LaForgue travels from Quebec into the heart of Native America. Set in New France in the 1630s. Discussant: Michael Oberg, History October 27 – 7pm Smoke Signals (Canada, USA, 1998; 89 min.) Cultural Harmony Week Co-Sponsored Event With a screenplay by Sherman Alexie, Smoke Signals is distinguished as the first film written, directed, co-produced, and acted by Native Americans. This award-winning “road picture” humorously subverts stereotypes along the literal and figurative journey of protagonists Victor Joseph and Thomas Builds-the-Fire. Discussant:  Caroline Woidat, English November 10 – 7pm Even the Rain (Spain, Mexico, France, 2010; 103 min.) An International Education Week Co-Sponsored Event A Spanish director and producer arrive in Bolivia to make a film about Columbus, Conquest and Colonization, but instead find themselves involved in the locals’ protests over the privatization of their water supply by multi-national corporations.
