Shown is the human blastocyst prior to implantation (left) and the human conceptus shortly after implantation as gastrulation begins (right). The inner cell mass (ICM) of the blastocyst forms the epiblast of the germ disc, which is underlain by the primitive endoderm. As gastrulation begins, the primitive streak in the middle of the disc generates a mesoderm layer that separates the epiblast and primitive endoderm. Definitive endoderm will also be generated to replace the primitive endoderm. The trophectoderm of the blastocyst produces invasive syncytiotrophoblasts that promote the attachment and invasion of the conceptus into the uterine wall.
