5 The Cold War At Home Americans began to get scared that there might be communists living amongst us This fear intensified with the fall of China and the stalemate of the Korean War This fear would guide American actions at home… Why are Americans afraid of? Infer what they might do out of fear.

6 McCarthyism Senator Joseph McCarthy (Republican) claimed to have names of Communist members working in the government Never actually produced a name but still continued to put fear in Americans McCarthyism has come to refer to the unfair tactic of accusing people of disloyalty without providing evidence Took it too far by accusing U.S. Army and bullying witnesses, which lost public support and led to his downfall If you were named, you lost everything! (friends, jobs, respect unless you gave more names) What do you think would happen if a person questioned McCarthy because he never provided evidence?
