5 EDC Waste: Objectives Be the central entry point for EU waste data
Manage this data, perform quality assurance and coordinate with Go4 partners Develop methodologies, provide guidance for reporting under EU waste legislation Be reference point for (statistical) information / data / indicators on waste and associated environmental impacts 5.1 Data centre progress report

6 EDC Waste: Progress since 2009 meeting
People: We are now 7 officials Data centre is operational and (quite) in line with its objectives: - single entry point for 9+ (!) reporting obligations on waste - data centre website ( = recognised dissemination site for EU data on waste (see 5.2) - good progress with guidance documents (WStatR manual, ELV and WEEE reporting) Agreement on the revision of the Regulation (see 3.1) A series of new services: - Price index for recyclables - (gradually) presentation of all waste data in Tables-Graphs-Maps tool 5.1 Data centre progress report

7 EDC Waste: Challenges 2010/11
Get all waste data into the Eurostat dissemination database Harmonise (y)our reporting tools (EDAMIS, WebForms) Overcome inconsistencies (in methodology and quality issues) between WStatR and other reporting obligations Improve relevance of “our Regulation” for policy monitoring Visibility: Publish data and indicators in “Statistics in Focus”, provide analyses and meta-information in “Statistics Explained”, produce “News Releases”, … FAQ: Make replies to ad-hoc request (e.g. EP questions, …) and typical user queries available Enhance dialogue with users – re-establish Steering Committee 5.1 Data centre progress report

8 EDC Waste … for the Countries
Your data published and always available at one place Potential for streamlining and synergies for reporting on waste becomes visible Make use of common methodology and classification Improved data quality by “cross-validation” of data from different reporting obligations Reduce/abolish multiple reporting: Data is available for other purposes: e.g. municipal waste for OECD and UN What we hope: Increased communication among Competent Authorities at national and networks at EU level (EIONET – ESS) 5.1 Data centre progress report

9 10/10 Environmental Data Centres
Air European Environment Agency Climate change Water Biodiversity Land use Soil Joint Research Centre Forestry Natural Resources Products Waste Plans: Workshop scheduled for 19 March 2010: - Review “State of Play” - Are we “Fit for purpose” ? - How “common” do we need to be ? - Identification of “other” users needs - Next steps, do we need to update the Technical Arrangement ? 5.1 Data centre progress report
