Abstract: Closing Report for the Active RFID Session in Los Angeles, California.
Purpose: This amendment defines a Physical Layer (PHY), and those Medium Access Control Layer (MAC) modifications required to support it, for Active Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) readers and tags. It allows for efficient communications with active RFID tags and sensor applications in an autonomous manner in a promiscuous network, using very low energy consumption (low duty cycle), and low PHY transmitter power. The PHY parameters are flexible and configurable to provide optimized use in a variety of active RFID tag operations including simplex and duplex transmission (reader-to-tag and tag-to-readers), multicast (reader to a select group of tags), uni-cast as in reader to a single tag, tag-to-tag communication, and multi-hop capability.

Active RFID System Overview
The IEEE f Task Group is chartered to define the Physical (PHY) layer(s), and those modifications which may be required of the IEEE Medium Access Control (MAC) layer, necessary to support low cost, ultra low energy consumption (battery and energy harvesting) Active RFID system and sensor applications with requirements for reliable communications and/or location ranging capability.
During the months of November and December 2008 the IEEE 802 LAN/MAN Standards Committee (LMSC), IEEE-SA New Standards Committee (NesCom), and the IEEE-SA Standards Board (SASB)  approved the IEEE 802 Project Authorization Request (PAR) document submitted by the RFID Study Group. As a result the IEEE f Active RFID System Task Group is now formed. IEEE Study Group and Task Group documents can be downloaded from;

Reviewed of the f Project Authorization Request (PAR).
Reviewed and discussed a draft timeline/schedule.
Discussed and and began to define efforts necessary to fulfill the scope of the 15.4f PAR.

Discuss and define basic Active RFID System requirements from applications received and discussed.
Discuss and define basic Active RFID System proposal selection criteria.
Discuss and determine whether an Active RFID Call-for-Applications (CFA) should be released requesting additional presentations to be heard at the May 2009 IEEE 802 Interim meeting in Montreal, Canada.
Discuss and create a Call-for-Intent (CFI) seeking summary proposal presentations to be heard at the May 2009 IEEE 802 Interim meeting in Montreal, Canada.
