Over-generalization A faulty reasoning technique or fallacy where the writer makes a statement that is too broad to prove.

Vernacular The language or dialect spoken by the ordinary people in a particular country or region.

Claim / Thesis This is typically one sentence that tells the reader what the whole text is about. It can be the point the author is trying to argue.

Hook / Attention Grabber
This is the very first line in a paper. It needs to get the attention of the reader and make them interested in actually reading the rest of the text.

Counterclaim This is information that argues against your original point. Example: If I’m trying to argue that teenagers shouldn’t be allowed to drive until they are 18, a counterclaim would discuss how students need to be able to get to school and work without relying on family.

Although more than one propaganda technique was used in the below advertisement, only identify one to write about in your essay. Analyze the advertisement/text and use specific details from the advertisement/text to support your analysis. Explain the importance or significance of the propaganda technique you’re writing about in your essay. Remember to write a conclusion that restates the prompt in totally different words.

Although more than one propaganda technique was used in the below advertisement, only identify one to write about in your essay. In an advertisement for Colgate mouthwash, the viewer is presented with a view of a couple in bed. Both appear to be sleeping peacefully. The one clear difference is that the man has a sleep mask on, covering his eyes, and the woman has a sleep mask on, covering her mouth and nose. This advertisement uses both the plain folks and emotional propaganda techniques to appeal to the viewer.

Analyze the advertisement/text and use specific details from the advertisement/text to support your analysis. Explain the importance or significance of the propaganda technique you’re writing about in your essay. Although Colgate was clearly trying to be humorous in their advertisement, it came across as sexist. Colgate was trying to convey that the man’s breath was so horrendous the woman needed to cover her nose even while sleeping. Humor is one emotion that is played on quite frequently when emotional propaganda is used. Sadly, the advertisement portrays something far worse. Since the mask is also covering the woman’s mouth, it is almost as if saying that women should be the submissive partner in the relationship. Rather than stirring up a humorous reaction, the advertisement was disturbingly sexist.

Analyze the advertisement/text and use specific details from the advertisement/text to support your analysis. Explain the importance or significance of the propaganda technique you’re writing about in your essay. The use of emotional propaganda is significant in any advertisement because it plays on our most basic emotions. In this case, humor is a strong emotion and causes people to remember an advertisement better. Since it could clearly be twisted around, this image is remembered more for its controversy of silencing women than it is using mouthwash.

Remember to write a conclusion that restates the prompt in totally different words.
In conclusion, Colgate tried to use humorous emotional propaganda to make its advertisement stand out. Sadly, the advertisement stands out for an entirely different reason.
