Before teaching, be aware that: On Day 1 you will need: flip chart, metre stick, tape measures. Please see notes for Slide 8 for detail of the practical activities essential for this lesson. On Day 2 you will need: metre stick, tape measures. Children will need the ‘Are both our feet the same size?’ resource sheet, rulers, paper, pencils and scissors. Year 3

Say a 3 x table question, e.g. 4 times 3. First to turn around and say the correct answer wins and stays up. Choose another child to be the challenger. Vary vocabulary, e.g. multiplied by, times, lots of etc. Keep pace quick. Year 3

7 Which would be more than 1m? Which would be less than 1m?

8 How many cm in 1m 70cm? How many cm in 2m? How many cm in 1m 34cm?

How many cm in 2m 25cm? How many cm in 1m 3cm? Organise children into 2 teams. Check answers to the questions on this slide and draw out and correct any misconceptions. Award 1 point if correct. Repeat with the other team. Then choose two children from one team to measure an object from the flipchart list, using a tape measure, for a bonus point. The other team choose someone to check it is correct. Record lengths that children measure in a table (see resources). How many cm in 1m 67cm? Year 3

We can record their lengths in metres and centimetres or in centimetres. Today we are going to measure our feet! What units will be best to measure this length? Why not metres? Year 3

If a rubber was 2cm 3mm long what would that be in mm? If someone’s foot was 16cm 3mm what would that be in mm? That’s more accurate than 16 or 17cm! Write its length in cm and mm. Repeat this trying to draw a wiggly line of exactly 10cm. True or false • Ten lots of 100mm is the same as 1 metre. • Half a centimetre is 50mm. • There are 200mm in 20cm. • 5 metres is longer than 5000mm • The average domestic cat is about 40cm, tip of nose to end of tail.
