Geometry-Part 10

The amount of 3-Dimensional space that an object occupies is called its Volume. The volume of a prism is V=Bh, where B=Base Area and h=height.

Rectangular Prism Use the diagram below to find the volume formula for a rectangular prism.

Example Find the volume of the rectangular prism below.

Cube Use the diagram below to find the volume formula for a cube.

Example

Triangular Prism Use the diagram below to find the volume formula for a triangular prism.

Example Find the volume of the triangular prism below.

Cylinders Use the diagram below to find the volume formula for a cylinder.

Example Find the volume of the cylinder below.

Cylinders, Cones, and Spheres
Cylinders, Cones, and Spheres are related to each other. CONES: Cones and cylinders share a relationship. We can create a comparison of the two 3-D figures to find the volume formula of a cone. When you compare the capacity of a cylinder to the capacity of a cone, a cone can hold about ________ as much as a cylinder with the same base.

Predict the amount of the cylinder that will be filled if the fist “squishes” the cone into the cylinder. Use this ratio to find the volume Formula for a cone.

Example Find the volume of the cone below.

Spheres and cylinders share a relationship
Spheres and cylinders share a relationship. We can create a comparison of the two 3-D figures to find the volume formula of a sphere. When you compare the capacity of a cylinder to the capacity of a sphere, a sphere can hold about ________ as much as a cylinder with the same base.

Predict the amount of the cylinder that will be filled if the fist “squishes” the sphere into the cylinder. Use this ratio and the formula for volume of a cylinder to find the volume of a sphere.
