2 Playing Social Roles Social roles - roles that people play in real life Everyday roles, like those in a family (wife, mother, brother, etc.) Social roles, like those from school, work, neighborhood, etc. Citizen roles, like keeping informed and participating in society Many others.

3 Roles as Expected Behavior
Behavior in a role is determined by a set of expectations Also influenced by the kind of person you are People change roles, sometimes due to different circumstances (marriage, birth, etc.) Roles change over time (parent of infant vs. parent of adult)

4 Roles as Expected Behavior
Some roles overlap (e.g., studying w/friends = student and friend role) Sometimes roles conflict (e.g., hang out w/friends vs. go to work) Your values should guide your behavior

5 Level of Participation
How actively will you participate in a given role? Participate or not, be a leader or not, etc. Consequences for participating or not

6 The Citizen Role Active Participants Planning school activities
Working on political campaigns Contributing to the Common Good Volunteering to feed the homeless Working at a school Setting Priorities How much time will you devote Other roles influence decisions What is most important to you?
