Transmission of HIV-1 through exposure of vaginal endocervical cells to semen
Semen contains syncytia-inducing (SI) and non-syncytia-inducing (NSI) HIV-1 isolates. NSI isolates are preferentially transmitted, most likely through uptake by CD4 and CCR5 receptors expressed on monocytic and dendritic cells.
