Lessons from Samuel ~ 1 Sam. 3-28

As a Person of God… He spent a lot of time with Eli, but his parents were good (1 Sam. 1-3). Samuel served before the LORD, even as a child (1 Sam. 2:18). As Samuel grew in years, he also grew in favor with the LORD and men (1 Sam. 2:26). He was taught very early to say, “speak LORD, for your servant hears.” (1 Sam. 3:9) He admonished the Israelites (1 Sam. 7:3-5).

As a Person of God… The influence of one person can have an enormous impact (2 Sam. 7:13). Took the people’s disobedience to the LORD personally (1 Sam. 8:6). Was well-known among people for his righteousness & dealing prudently (1 Sam.12:1-5). He was direct and intentional in his words and actions (12:1-25; 13:11-15). Samuel grieved over Saul’s unfaithful actions, and cried out to the Lord all night (1 Sam.15:10-12).

As a Person of God… Samuel was not perfect. Even he had to be lifted to get back on track at times (1 Sam.16:1-4). Saul didn’t respect God’s word, but he thought “if anyone could help me, it’d be Samuel!” (1 Sam. 28) Was a great man of faith, and generations still note his faithfulness (2 Chron. 35:18; Heb. 11:32). Described as always praying for Israel (1 Sam. 7:9; 8:6; 12:19).

As a Father… Had some similarities to Eli concerning how his sons turned out (1 Sam. 8:1-9). Had a plurality of children unfaithful (1 Sam. 8:2-3). Even with his children not being faithful; Samuel does not let that deter him from doing the work that God would allow him to do (1 Sam. 8:3). Constantly seen working with Israel to keep them on the right track - providing constant care. Samuel spoke the word of the LORD (1 Sam. 8:10), and there is consistency in his role as judge over the nation & as a prophet.

Hear the gospel of Jesus Christ (Rom. 10:14,17). Believe in Jesus Christ (Acts 16:30-33). Repent of all your past sins (Acts 17:30-31). Confess your faith in Jesus Christ (Acts 8:35-37). Be baptized (immersed in water) into Jesus Christ (Acts 8:38; 22:16). After becoming saved, live a faithful/righteous life to remain saved (1 Tim. 4:16; 1 Jn. 1:7).
