He or she is regarded as a wise and trusted counsellor or teacher and also an influential senior sponsor or supporter. It is a meaningful commitment

3 Role of a Mentor Be a good listener
Be open minded and flexible [open to gaining knowledge of backgrounds] – Seek to gain information on background Display warmth and empathy that invite learners to come to you Be a care giver – able to give supervision and to be accountable

Ensure learners are equipped with books, uniforms, stationery Identify problems early Provide emotional safety and support Display own [mentor’s] vulnerability and be open to self –learning Settle learners and put them at ease

5 Role of a Mentor Provide orientation to school [processes, routines, rules] Establish trust Provide an ear – be an active listener Help learners engage with this new opportunity - build trust and create a support base Important to enhance / encourage culture

6 Role of a Mentor Be an effective communicator
Time management, administrative and organizational skills Help to set realistic goals and cope with disappointment and devise step by step process to realize goals.

Gender issues -  a team approach can help to support problematic or sensitive areas [ e.g. boarding team plays a vital role]  adopt different approaches to different sexes

8 Lessons Learnt from Mentoring
Allow the individual to bond with different mentors Not to take responsibility at an emotional level – don’t take the family dynamic away from the child.  Skill them to cope with their own circumstances. Mentors have to know their limitations in dealing with confidentiality issues, trauma, etc – must refer or consult. Know where to hand over to the professionals
