If you haven’t turned in your signed parent letter, you will not be able to participate in the computer activity Friday. We are going to finish your listening notes today. Please prepare yourselves.

3 How to be a good listener in the classroom
1. Sit up and stay still 2. Look at the teacher 3. Follow instructions 4. Ask questions when you are unsure but not a question that has already been answered.

4 5. Try not to sit with friends.
6. Be prepared for class. 7. Be organized.

5 Bad Listening Habits 1. Criticizing the speaker
2. Listening only for facts 3. Not taking notes 4. Creating OR tolerating distractions 5. Letting emotional words block the message.

7 3 keys to develop active listening
1. Keep an open mind. Give the speaker your full attention. 2. Ignore distractions Sit up front when possible POLITELY ask others to be quiet

8 3. Participate Make eye contact Use body language to show you’re still engaged

9 7 Levels of Listening 1. Not listening – paying no attention
2. Pretend listening 3. Partially listening – giving someone your divided attention 4. Focused listening – giving someone your undivided attention

10 5. Interpretive listening – trying to understand what the person is saying
6. Interactive listening – asking questions for clarifications 7. Engaged listening – everyone is given the chance to fully express their views, feelings, and ideas Good students should fall between numbers 4 – 7.
