2 Risk L.O: to define risk to list examples of risk factors for cancer and CHD

3 Risk Risk is part of every human endeavour. From the moment we get up in the morning, drive or take public transportation to get to school or to work until we get back into our beds (and perhaps even afterwards), we are exposed to risks of different degrees. What makes the study of risk fascinating is that while some of this risk bearing may not be completely voluntary, we seek out some risks on our own (speeding on the highways or gambling, for instance) and enjoy them. While some of these risks may seem trivial, others make a significant difference in the way we live our lives.

5 Risk ‘A measure of the probability that damage to health will occur as a result of given hazard’ Probability that the event will happen Consequences of the event

6 Risk Factors What do you (and others!) choose do that increases your risk of cancer and coronary heart disease? So what is a risk factor? Write a definition. Write these into a Venn diagram: Do you think there are any gender differences in your list? Write a M or F if you think it’s a risk factor more common one particular gender. Cancer Both CHD
