Economic Policy The American economy grew rapidly partially because of new government policy: Henry Clay’s American System: Clay – Speaker of the House of Representatives Economic development program that included: 1) tariffs to help industry 2) a national bank to stabilize the economy 3) transportation projects to build commerce and trade. Impact: Economic growth and more nationalism.

4 A. Economic Policy Result: Massive increase in transportation in the form of canals and railroads.

5 B. Innovations Industrial Revolution: a shift from making goods by hand to making them with machines. Leads to lots of new inventions that affect the South and the North differently: Steamboat: designed by Robert Fulton to use rivers and canals sea transportation. Allowed people and goods to travel further. Cotton gin: created by Eli Whitney to pull fibers from cotton faster and be ready for manufacturing. Interchangeable parts: products all contain the same style of parts, so they are easy to make and put together. Impact: Created more trade and improves the economy, but does so in different ways for the North and South.

Because of the Embargo Act and the War of 1812, the U.S. was forced to manufacture their own goods – the American System helped new manufacturing grow. How? Workers: Lowell System – recruits mostly young women and gives them a dormitory to live in. Children as young as 7 New Immigrants – particularly the Irish and Germans

Enormous growth in the production of cotton between and 1860. Why? Reason 1: Reason 2:

Women: more opportunity for employment – begin gaining more control over their lives. Economic opportunity: wages increase, but the more wealthy benefit more. However, the U.S. had greater economic opportunities than Europe. Growth of Slavery: most thought slavery would die out, but the cotton gin creates dramatic growth in the slave population.
