The basic data represent the incidence of gastric cancer in Japanese men in the late 1960s and are representative of a population with a high incidence of Helicobacter pylori and atrophic gastritis. (A) The incidence of gastric cancer is plotted logarithmically. The incidence in those with atrophic gastritis/gastric atrophy is also shown, as is the incidence of metachronous cancers after endoscopic resection of an early gastric cancer. (B) Latent period and the period of exponential increase, which correlate with increasing extent and severity of atrophic gastritis.
