1 Amines AH Chemistry, Unit 3(b)

2 Overview Organic derivatives of ammonia
One or more of the hydrogen atoms replaced with an alkyl or aryl group Can be classified as primary, secondary or tertiary

3 Physical properties Does hydrogen bonding exist in amines?
Primary and secondary only How does this affect their solubility?

4 Naming Two methods for primary amines:
Remove the “e” from the parent hydrocarbon and add the suffix “-amine” e.g. ethanamine Add the suffix “-amine” to the name of the substituent group e.g. ethylamine

5 Secondary and tertiary amines are named by citing the substituent group, R, preceded by the prefix “di” or “tri” respectively, followed (without a space) by “amine” e.g. dimethylamine, butyldimethylamine * If the amine group is not the principal group in the compound, it is named “amino”

6 Ethylamine 2-propylamine Triethylamine

7 Chemical properties Amines are weak bases
Why? React with aqueous mineral acids and carboxylic acids Producing salts
