2 Our Mission To promote restoration and stewardship of the Rouge River ecosystem through education, citizen involvement and other collaborative efforts, for the purpose of improving the quality of life for the people, plants and animals of the watershed

3 Our 3D Terrain model! In September 2017, raised funds to create an exciting new educational tool: a three- dimensional 3.5’ x 3.5’, interactive, waterproof terrain model of the Rouge River Watershed. Includes vertical relief, watershed boundaries, sub- watersheds, ghost streams, geographic markers and more! + Over 50 individual donors

5 The funds raised covered the raw cost of the model, but didn’t cover any additional items needed to be fully interactive, marketed, protected and transportable…. where POW comes in Task force worked with Howard Models to formalize design and layout. Model started to visit classrooms, part of public presentations and events

6 Request from POW interactive “how to” tool-kit
Developing “how to” present basic guidelines-booklet for volunteer presenters/educators Accompanying mini lesson plans To be worked on over the winter months With funds from Pure Oakland Water, the Friends of the Rouge plan to develop an interactive “how to” tool-kit with accompanying mini lesson plans around the model to inspire understanding and stewardship of the Rouge Watershed. Plan to develop two simple lesson plans to use in longer demonstrations/classrooms. Will work with 3D terrain model task force to develop (worked with them to develop existing model).

7 Safety and Mobility Custom designed protection “sleeve” for the 3D model for transportability and protection. logo embroidered on the outside. rolling cart to assist in transporting the model longer distances still requires two able bodied people to move the model, but it now has more protection and ease of mobility. Concept designed by FOTR staff member, Karen Hanna.

8 Marketing and Visibility
. Marketing and Visibility Marketing company helping to develop banners to accompany the 3D model. Several renditions of the banner have been proposed with no final product ready to be produced.

9 Digital Education Developing digital model of the Rouge River Watershed with ArcGIS Online. developed the initial map concept, and developed a post on our website for the draft. (not available to public yet) uploaded a majority of the layers used to develop the physical terrain model. Map builds upon the terrain model by enabling users to dynamically adjust scales to zoom into neighborhoods or zoom out to subwatersheds or beyond. The map depicts the same data provided by the terrain model, plus additional data, all on layers that users can turn on or off to adjust their views. Data includes: monitoring data (Frogs, toads, and bugs), parks and hiking trails, controlled and uncontrolled sewer overflows, ghost streams, and more! Programs take advantage of public data sharing. For example, the map also depict soils data, adapted for easy public consumption by relying on soil infiltration grades (A, B, C, D, etc), which our rain garden programming would then use to educate the public about their potential for green infrastructure. By making this data available on a user-friendly, engaging web platform, Friends of the Rouge will provide a valuable public education service for residents of the Rouge River Watershed. This service will help advance our goals towards protecting and restoring the Rouge River. Our website receives around 25,000 visitors each year. We plan to work on this map further in the winter when outdoor projects slow down.

11 COMMENTS ON THE MAP? soliciting feedback regarding additional data layers that might complete the map. Possible additional data layers include: US Census data (racial diversity, median income, etc), percent impervious, land use, and others to be determined
