SCHOOL’S PURPOSE Our mission as a school community of students, teachers and parents is to create a safe and nurturing environment that provides an engaging, authentic educational experience built on student centered data, current educational research and innovative instructional techniques. The mission is to develop the whole child, academically, socially and emotionally, to meet individual needs and learning styles. Our foremost goal is to act as a catalyst for our students in developing their ongoing achievement and successes as lifelong learners. Re-Accredited in April 2017, and our External Review Team found our focus on the WHOLE CHILD to be a profound practice, or something that should be replicated across all schools. This mission is woven into everything we do at CAES. We are not just a school. We are a community working together to provide the best possible well-rounded experience for your children.

Grading & Reporting Chesterbrook Academy Elementary School

Grading & Reporting New Hybrid Report Card Traditional Grades
Standards Based Marks Effort & Homework Formative Assessments: i-Ready, First in Math Summative Assessments: AABL/CTP Spring (April 23-27, 2018)
17
K-2 Traditional Grading Scale
Grade Level of Performance E Excellent G Good S Satisfactory N Needs Improvement NA Not Assessed At This Time Traditional grade to report overall achievement Used in core content areas & specialty subjects Based on current practices in NLCI schools NO CHANGES to how you determine this grade For K-2 teachers, we are using an E-G-S-N grading scale. You can find this marking scale on your sample template. As you can see, if is just what you have been doing (or is very close to what you have been doing). It might look a little bit different if you were using and O for outstanding instead of an E, but overall, this should be a simple, comfortable scale for you, your students, and your parents.
18
3-8 Traditional Grading Scale
why no pluses and minuses: Research shows that as the number of levels increases, the reliability of validity of the measure decreases. Difficult to distinguish an A- from a B+ More clear and concise No Changes Traditional percentage grade still used to report overall achievement Used in core content areas & specialty subjects Based on current practices in NLCI schools Most reliable & valid percentage scale
19
Standards Groups Proficiency Marking Scale
For the report card, we will be using a 4-point scale to indicate the level at which a student is able to perform the standards with each report cards standards group. Let’s talk through each one…. Talk through each level. Focus on key words. Emphasize the differences between each level. What distinguishes emerging from approaching, etc. So if we take the standard: Student can ride and maneuver a two-wheel bike independently (with no support) Level 1: Child has limited proficiency. This child needs a high level of support to be successful. A trike is low to ground and sturdy for a child who is unable to balance on 2 wheels. Level 2: Child is approaching the standard. This child needs training wheels to ride and maneuver a two wheel bike. This child needs a little support and a little more time to reach full mastery. Level 3: This child shows complete mastery of the skill. The child independently rides the bike with no support. Level 4: This child exceeds the standard because he is able to ride the bike at a higher level with tricks, demonstrating advanced balance and maneuvering of the bike. NA – Not assessed at this time – we do not have enough data to determine mastery Our goal is to get everyone to a level 3. Emerging standard
20
Traditional vs. Standards-Based
Traditional Grades Standards-Based Marks Traditional Grades are comprehensive – an average of all grades throughout grading period Traditional Grades include all assignments – tests, quizzes, homework, projects, effort, etc. Traditional Grades do NOT tell us what a student knows and can do and where they need more support Give parents MORE information Standards-based marks are reflective of what a student knows and is able to do at a specific point in time (end of grading period) Allow us to personalize learning more appropriately You will see more open-ended assessments Traditional vs. Standards-Based
21
Sample Report Card Template
Traditional Grade A 3 3 Standards-Based Marks 2 NA 3 Remember, the traditional (letter) grade is a summary of all activities, and the standards-based mark is reflective of what the child knows and can do today. Again, we strive for 3s because that indicates mastery of the standard. The letter grade A does not mean the student is achieving mastery of all standards, and a 3 on the marking scale does equate to an A.
