Peter the Great (1696) modernized/’westernized’ Russia
Catherine the Great (1762) conquered much of Europe, added 25% land to Russia

Nicholas I (1850s) loved autocracy
Alexander II more reform minded / but assassinated / freed 20 million serfs same day as Lincoln signed Emancipation Proclamation.
