2 School Wellness

3 A Wellness Policy helps create a healthy school environment.
Our wellness policy talks about: Foods and drinks sold to students Food and beverages, not sold, but provided to students  Informing the community, leadership, and more

4 The Smart Snack in School standards (as well as the Healthy Hunger Kids Act of 2010) were created to combat childhood obesity and support better health for our kids. Those standards include (not limited to): Be whole grain rich Less than 200 calories Less than 200 mg of sodium per package or served Fresh/frozen fruits or vegetable with no additives Dried or dehydrated fruits w/o nuts with no added sweeteners

5 Food and Drinks Served in School
All other food and drinks served at school must follow the Smart Snacks standards and must not be during: Breakfast, Lunch or Snack. A list of Smart Snack Approved Items will be available on the department website under the Wellness tab. Scroll to the bottom and you’ll see a list of Approved Items under Smart Snacks in School Questions? Contact: Kimberly Goodman Phone: (626)

6 Food and Drinks Served in School
Lets go over some examples…. Ex 1: John wants to bring Dunkin Donuts to Will Smith Elementary School at 7am for his son’s birthday. Is this allowable? Unfortunately, this is not allowable. Donuts are not Smart Snack approved . Also, Mr. Smith is not allowed to bring any items during breakfast service. Ex 2: Mrs. Johnson a principal at Barack Obama Middle School, wants to serve plain nachos (no salt tortilla chips, herb seasoned ground beef, and low- fat cheddar cheese) to students on campus during lunch. Is this allowable? Unfortunately, this is not allowable. Even though, the type of nachos are Smart Snack approved. Mr. Kemp cannot serve them during lunch service.

7 Food and Drinks Sold in School
All items sold in school must be Smart Snack Approved and cannot be sold during the “School Day.”

8 Food and Drinks Sold in School
What do you mean by “School Day”? California Department of Education considers a “School Day” to be between midnight and 3:30 pm.

9 Food and Drinks Sold in School
So what does that mean? That means that after 3:30 pm (or 30 minutes after a minimum day) until midnight you can sell or serve whatever you want on campus with the districts approval. If not on campus, (ex: In front of the school), you will need to have a health permit from your local Health Department.

10 Food and Drinks Provided (Not Sold) to Students
Our wellness policy includes: Celebrations and Parties: Non-food rewards like: Arts & Crafts projects, games, dance parties, or scavenger hunts. Classroom Snacks Brought by Parents: All food must meet or exceed the Smart Snacks requirements and must be done after lunch for all grades Rewards and Incentives: Stickers, Decorative Pencils/Erasers, Colored Pencils, Coloring Books etc. Speaking Points: Parents or teachers usually bring in food for birthdays or parties. Our School Wellness Policy mandates that we either give Smart Snack Approved items after lunch or non food rewards A list of approved items will be available on the school nutrition website but until then, if you have any question please call the department and we will be happy to provide you with that information. Get involved! Help educate other parents of our policy when they volunteer to bring food to classroom celebrations or provide classroom snacks.

11 Informing the Community and Leadership
