2 The Act Respecting Labour Standars
The Act respecting labour standards sets the minimum conditions of employment for all Quebec Employees The Act establishes the foundations of a universal system of labour standards

3 The Act covers the following areas:
Wages Hours of work Annual leave Statutory holidays Leaves for family events Notice of termination Complaints Prohibited practices Unfounded dismissals

4 La Commission des normes du travail
The Act respecting labour standards came into force April 16, 1980 The Commission des norms, de l’ équité, de la santé et de la securité du travail was invested with the power to oversee the application of this law

5 La Commission exercises the following functions:
Informs the population on matters dealing with labour standards Supervises the application of labour standards and transmits any recommendations to the Ministère Strives to bring about agreement between employees and employers regarding a disagreement in relation to the Act and its regulations

By implementing a universal system of labour conditions in Quebec, the Comission contributes to developing and maintaining better relations between employers and employees!

8 How often do employees get paid?
Employees either get paid weekly or every second week Wages must be paid at regular intervals, not surpassing 16 days

9 Breaks After 5 hours of work, employees are entitled to a 30 minute paid break A 1 hour lunch break is not paid

10 Duration of a Work Week & Overtime
A regular workweek is 40 hours, anything above that is considered overtime Overtime must be paid at a rate of time in a half or a payment can be replaced with a requested leave or time off, at the discretion of the employer and the employee.

11 CNESST As employees, you have rights when it comes to your health and safety on the job In Quebec, La Commission des normes, de l'équité, de la santé et de la sécurité du travail, CNESST, works with employees and employers to apply laws that respect and protect health and safety for all The CNESST is also in charge of work place inspection The main focus of the CNESST is prevention By implementing preventative measures, work-related accidents and occupational diseases are reduced If workers get sick or hurt on the job, compensation and rehabilitation are offered

12 CNESST In case of a workplace accident, the procedures below must be met: The employer must be notified immediately The worker must be transported to a hospital or clinic The employer must notify CNESST The worker must provide a doctors note that he or she is unable to work For two weeks after the accident, the employer must pay 90% of the employee’s wage If the absence exceeds two weeks, CNESST continues to pay 90% of the wage Medical expenses are reimbursed by CNESST A temporary worker can be replaced by the employer till he or she returns
