Thursday 8th November 11.45am- 2.00pm
When is the exam? Thursday 8th November 11.45am- 2.00pm 15 minutes reading 120 minutes writing 100 marks
5
All the key knowledge and key skills for unit 3 & 4 can be examined.
Structure of the exam 15 minutes reading 120 minutes writing 100 marks All the key knowledge and key skills for unit 3 & 4 can be examined.
6
Structure of the exam The examination will consist of short-answer and extended-answer questions, including questions with multiple parts. At least one question, or one part of one question, will be worth 8–10 marks. The examination may include questions that refer to visual and/or written material, including scenarios.
7
Structure of the exam You will be given a question booklet and all your answers are to be written in the booklet. If you write in the extra space at the back of the book you need to specifically list each question. Questions usually include stimulus such as graphs, tables, statistics, articles and case studies. One question is more than likely to address more than one area of study to see how effectively you can pull together your knowledge (remember both unit 3 & 4 are examinable and top level students will be able to look at the course material as a whole, rather than only being able to understand information in separate parts.)
8
Some useful tips… Use mark allocation and space provided as a guide for detail required. If question asks for three factors, only first three will be assessed. The first question following a table / graph usually asks you about trends from the graph (don’t give reasons unless you are asked to). If you run out of time, direct markers to your plan if you have made one. This can be particularly helpful for extended response questions. The exam does not include ‘trick’ questions.
9
Some useful tips… Use appropriate terminology.
Do not re write question or include an introduction. If you have done this in SACs I have scribbled it out, it wastes time If you make a mistake, rule it out, no whiteout. Always re-read answers after you have finished. There is no such thing as spare time at the end. You should stay in the room until the exam finishes. Make sure handwriting is legible. No grey lead pencil!
10
Directive words What does it mean?
Analyse Examine the points identified with a topic to explain the key issues Compare/Contrast Similarities and differences Define Meaning of term Describe Identify main features or characteristics Discuss Explain both advantages and disadvantages of the topic Explain Give interpretation of information to show good understanding Evaluate Use criteria to make judgement about value of issue Justify Explain or give reasons why a particular choice is made Identify/ list Recognise and name Outline Summary or brief overview of important features Recommend Suggest what to do in a particular situation and explain why

You must remember to... Study in bit size “chunks” your brain won’t retain information of the same subject if you study it for over 2 hours Work out a routine that suits you and STICK TO IT Generate a list of things you want to achieve during the day. Have regular breaks – be disciplined in sticking to time limits! Reward yourselves Eat healthy foods and eat regularly -feed your brain enough glucose Get plenty of sleep!
12
So how do I study effectively?
Organise and collate your resources from the year before you begin. Sort notes/booklets/SACs into correct units and AOS, use binders and dividers to organise your work. Use the VCAA study design KK and KS. Summarise each AOS, the amount of detail you include on your notes is up to you. Re-do practice SAC questions for each AOS and self mark them - Practise questions are useless unless you are marking them. Try some Practice Exams – Time yourself and do them under exam conditions. Self mark it to give yourself some feedback and then identify areas for further study. Write your own practice questions and read widely. This is a high level study technique, writing your own tricky questions enables you to easily break down questions. Also, if you are reading widely on health websites (WHO, UN, AIHW) you will expose yourself to lots of stimulus material.
13
Resources available Your textbook. It has Exam Practice Questions, Summary Pages and Key Skills Practice. It also has a variety of online StudyOn resources with sample exam questions. Edrolo. Re-watch video’s on concepts that you find hard, take summary notes. Complete the progress checks and self mark using the answers. STL link. Each AOS has revision resources that you may have used to prepare for your SACs. Practice Exams I will provide you with practice exams and responses. I will look over questions if they have been self marked first.
14
Some study techniques.. Cue cards
Posters – stick up in your bedroom, toilet, kitchen, bathroom Writing and then summarising Discussing a concept with your family, friends Record yourself talking about a topic using voice recorder on your iphones. Teaching concepts to anyone that will listen – your pets make great audiences
15
Remember this subject is not just about rote learning
Remember this subject is not just about rote learning. Its about being able to apply the knowledge you have to a given stimulus. This skill only comes with practice, practice and practice!
16
What to do during the holidays?
-Get your revision notes in order -Complete at least 1 practice exam before your trail exam in the last week of holidays Should you require to contact me during the holidays you can me, however, I will be limited in times that I will be able to respond.
17
What to do during reading time?
Look at the directive words – what are you being asked for? Begin planning your responses in your head Try to interpret stimulus material correctly (E.g. make sure you completely understand the axis on a graph). Note key words and understand what is expected eg: list, briefly describe, explain. Highlight these after reading time. What part of the course is the question assessing? Are there specific keys terms you should use in the answer as a result? Decide which question is easiest to answer and start with that.
18
What should I do during writing time?
Answer all questions Use black or blue pen Write legibly Read key directive words and instructions carefully – HIGHLIGHT KEY WORDS BEFORE YOU ANSWER THE QUESTION!!! Look at the mark allocation and the lines provided Keep an eye on the time – 1.2 minutes per mark. If a question is taking you too long, write some dot points and move on. Read over your answers if you finish early – check you have answered the question clearly and you know what your talking about!
