1 Unitary method

2 Introduction Finding the value of one unit and then using it to find the value of the required number of units is known as Unitary Method The Unitary method focuses on the “UNIT” which means one. Key : “Knowing for 1”

3 More units to 1 unit – Divide 1 units to more units – Multiply
Steps involved in Unitary method Express the problem in Mathematical Statement Find the value of one unit of the given item using Division Find the value of the required number of the same items using Multiplication More units to 1 unit – Divide 1 units to more units – Multiply

4 Example 1: The costs of 8kg of rice is Rs. 104
Example 1: The costs of 8kg of rice is Rs What is the costs of 6kg of rice? Solution: We can solve using unitary method, Step 1: Express in Mathematical statement Costs of 8 kg rice = Rs. 104 Step 2: Finding the value of one unit using division Cost of 1 kg rice = Step 3: Finding the value of 6kg rice using multiplication. Costs of 6kg rice = 13 x 6 = Rs 78 Hence, the costs of 6 kg rice is Rs.78

5 Example 2: If a person reads 60 pages of a book in 4 hours, how many pages will he read in 7 hours at the same speed? Solution: We can solve using unitary method, Step 1: Express in Mathematical statement Number of pages read in 4 hours = 60 Step 2: Finding the value of one unit using division Number of pages read in 1 hour = Step 3: Finding the value of pages read in 7 hours using multiplication. Number of pages read in 7 hours = 15 x 7 = 105 Hence, Number of pages read in 7 hours is 105

6 Example 3: A bus travel 360 km in 8 hour with constant speed.
How much distance it travels in 3 hour. Solution: We can solve using unitary method, Step 1: Express in Mathematical statement Bus travel in 8 hours = 360km Step 2: Finding the value of one unit using division Bus travel in 1 hour = Step 3: Finding the value of bus travel in 3 hours using multiplication. Bus travel in 3 hours = 45 x 3 = 135 Hence, Bus travel in 3 hours is 135

7 Try These A car travels 48kms 6 hours. How long will the car travel to cover a distance of 24kms?
