3 37 additional spaces in French teacher education programs co-funded by the Government of Canada through the Canada-British Columbia Agreement on Minority-Language Education and Second Official-Language Instruction ($120,000 to each of UBC and SFU) $90,000 for increasing support for French preservice and inservice educators at UBC and SFU (one-time funding) 5 provincial bursaries of $3000 for prospective teachers from France; 10 bursaries of $1250 for teachers to relocate to Canada

4 Challenges (in CPF FSL Teacher Supply & Demand in Canada)
Too few FSL teacher candidate applicants in some faculties of education to meet current demand. Too few post-secondary students meet the French-language proficiency requirements of FSL teacher education programs. FSL teachers move to English programs in response to often difficult working conditions.

5 Possible Solutions Remove the distinction between FSL teacher and (lifelong) FSL learner. Consider B1 threshold for beginning a French teacher education program and provide support during program and early career. Provide incentives to add immersive professional learning experiences throughout career. Encourage administrators, parents, students and others to celebrate ongoing language development.

Mandatory oral course for B1s, open to in-service teachers in 2nd semester 10 places in summer Institut de français for B1/B2 candidates Séjour UBC immersion weekend support for rural & local teachers & teacher candidates
