Joined first band, Crisp, at 17 Sia Kate Isobelle Furler was born on December 18, 1975 in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia. Phil Carson and Leone Furler are her parents who divorced when she was ten years old. Her uncles are Kevin Colson and Colin Hay. Her father and two uncles are all musicians ranging from Broadway performer to a member of Men at Work. With all of the musicians in her family it is obvious where she got her talent. An early indication to her family that she would go into the same career was when she imitated performances of singers she found influential. Her celebrity influences are Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder and Sting. The first band she joined was Crisp at the age of only seventeen. She was off to a great start which has led to an even better career.

All of these achievements showed that she is accepted by the public.

4 Mature Career 1000 Forms of Fear newest album
Does not show face at all This is Acting will have pop based songs Music now uses techno and has darker sound Uses Maddie Ziegler for performances Sia’s most important projects are her newest albums 1000 Forms of Fear and This is Acting Forms of Fear is important because it is the first album where she has not shown her face at all. She has also worked with more people for her music videos and live performances. Her unreleased album This is Acting is special because it will have more pop based songs and will be more like music she has written for other artists. Over time her music has progressed showing the change in her emotions. Her older music would be placed in the folk genre and used more instruments for her background such as woodwinds and strings. Now her music is more pop, her voice has progressed and she uses techno for her background. This has improved her music because it gives the dark tone she often uses.

6 Sia’s Phobia Sia has stage phobia Afraid of fame changing her
Fame established through writing for others and herself Can change her technique easily Sia Furler is definitely different from other songwriters and this has made people notice her even more. She wants exactly the opposite though because she is afraid of fame changing her. Her fame was established through writing songs for other singers while writing her own music. Even though she has a phobia she still sings and writes music for the public. She can even write her music in under an hour which shows that she has a true talent. Sia is an incredible artist because she has still been able to sing and write music even with her phobia. She makes the listener feel her emotions just by using her voice which adds a whole other dimension. Even though she has gone through a lot in her life she is still a very kind person. Her music is unique from other artists because she is able to change her technique when she needs too. Sia’s music deserves to be listened too and appreciated.

7 Collaborations Important collaborations with Flo Rida, Maddie Ziegler, and Shia Labeouf Written music for Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Rihanna and Katy Perry Written more than 5 songs for Christina Aguilera Sia has worked with many people which is her trademark. Important collaborators who she has worked with are Flo Rida, who whom she wrote Wild Ones with, and Maddie Ziegler and Shia Labeouf, who were both in her newest music videos. She has written music for Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Rihanna and Katy Perry. Some of her songs were turned down so she would give the song to another artist. She has written more than five songs for Christina Aguilera and the artist absolutely loves her. Aguilera said in an interview with Steve Knopper “‘I fell in love with the way she looks at life. There is a bit of darkness somewhere in there, but it doesn’t come across in a frightening way.’” Sia tries to make an emotional connection with the artists for whom she writes, in order to best convey their feelings. Her music today is very famous because she releasing so many albums right now. Her phobia and all her new music is making her even more popular.

8 Writing Technique Wrote Rihanna’s Diamonds in 14 minutes
Wrote Titanium in 40 minutes Able to capture other artist’s emotions Saw how fame ruined other artists One of Sia’s talents that is not known to many people is how she writes her music. She talked about this with Knopper in an interview “Furler wrote Rihanna’s “Diamonds” in 14 minutes. After the D.J. David Guetta invited her to write the melody and lyrics for one of his songs, she futzed around on the Internet and pumped out “Titanium” in 40 minutes.” She is able to write all of her music under an hour. Even if the song is for another artist she is still able to capture the other artists’ emotions. While writing for all these people she has gotten to know them very well. In an interview with Chris Connelly she said that one of the reasons her phobia formed is because she has made good friends with many famous artists and she does not want the same publicity they have. Writing music is her favorite talent and hopefully if she does stop writing music for herself she will still write for others.

9 Musical Style Her own music has a sad tone
When writing for others her tone completely changes The listener should expect a techno background Her vocals are very strong Can make you feel any emotion Sia’s musical style would be described as having a sad tone to it. This tone makes the listener actually feel what she is conveying in her voice. When she writes for other musicians the tone completely changes and sounds like something she would never write for herself. The listener should expect to hear techno used in the background and her voice is very strong so that is the number one thing that anyone notices. Her older music is sad too but has a different feel to it as if it could be played in a coffee shop in France. Her music is worth listening too because she is able to create many different emotions. She can make the listener feel angry, happy, depressed, etc. She was able to overcome the hardships in her life through writing music. Her music is absolutely beautiful.

11 Elastic Heart History Composed 2012-2013 Mature composition
Wrote song to handle breakup Used for Hunger Games: Catching Fire Collaborated with Diplo and the Weekend for Catching Fire Instrumentation: vocal, background vocals, drums, bass, synthesizer Elastic Heart by Sia is an interesting song that is different from the rest of her music. This song was composed in 2012 and 2013 for her newest album and a movie. This song would be considered to be mature because it is moving away from Sia’s older style and shows how she has advanced. Other notable compositions during this period are Chandelier and Big Girls Cry. Sia wrote this song to handle the breakup she was going through. This song was also used for the movie Hunger Games: Catching Fire. The producers of this song are Diplo and Greg Kurstin. This song was recorded at RCA, Republic, and Lionsgate. For her solo version of this song the collaborative writers were Thomas Wesley Pentz, Abel Tesfave and Andrew Swanson. For the Catching Fire version the collaborative artists were The Weekend and Diplo. Other people who played on this track were Greg Kurstin, Alex Pasco, Manny Marroquin, Chris Galland, Delbert Bowers, Brian "Big Bass" Gardner, Rob Kleiner, Andrew Swanson, and Diplo. They did not like the music video because they believe it is too sexual for a child making it harder for this piece to be accepted. This song was favored by critics. This song was used in the movie Catching Fire before Sia made a solo version. It was performed on Saturday Night Live, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Voice UK, and the Voice USA. It has 270 million YouTube views. On Billboard Hot 100 this song peaked at seventeen. On US Hot Dance Club Songs it peaked at number one. 13 Meaning of Lyrics For the movie: Conflict of the Hunger Games and not being broken by corruption of the government Solo version: Why her relationship die, she saw all the bad signs but kept the relationship, she is not broken but building herself back up The lyrics mean different things for the movie and the solo version. For the movie it is about the conflict in the Hunger Games world and about not being broken by the corruption of the government. This song is perfect for this movie because it fits it in with the plot. For the solo version the lyrics are about why her relationship died. It goes on to talk about how she saw all of the bad signs but kept going on with a relationship because she wanted it so bad. She than says that she is not broken but building herself back up to be whole again. This song was a way of Sia showing that she could not be broken by her failed relationship.

14 Selection of Elastic Heart
The instrumentation is different It is a series of three Like the meaning of the song I chose this song because it is my favorite song from Sia right now. This song has instrumentation like none other which makes it an amazing song. I also like how on Sia’s newest album this song is one of three which are a series. I like the meaning of this song because she does not easily break and will get back up even after a traumatic event. Elastic Heart is one of Sia’s best songs.
