2. Four Steps in developing your OV-2 Step 1 – Identify the Product’s Timescale
Decide on the timescale this product is expected to represent (as-is, to-be, transitional)
Multiple timescales are often needed for each product; a separate OV-2 should be produced for each timescale that is needed

3. Step 2 - Identify Operational Connectivity Diagram Components
Identify and List Operational Nodes
Determine and document the physical nodes and/or virtual nodes (based on operational roles) that exchange information
Operational nodes can include: a role (such as COMAST), an organisation (such as DMO), or a facility (such as a Field Hospital)
Identify and List the Activities performed by the Operational Nodes
Determine and document the activities that each operational node performs

4. Step 2 - Identify Operational Connectivity Diagram Components, continued…
Determine and document the need to transfer information among operational nodes. Such needs are described in terms of needlines
Determine and document the content and characteristics of each needline
Characteristics typically include performance attributes such as volume, throughput, frequency and media

5. Step 3 - Illustrate Operational Connectivity Diagram
Graphically portray the operational nodes and elements as icons
Connect the operational nodes and elements with arrows to depict the needlines or information flows among them
Enter relevant and appropriate descriptive information on the needlines
This should only be a summary with details in the OV-3

6. Templates
Two example templates have been provided following this slide – please amend or add to as necessary

9. Step 4 - Update your Integrated Dictionary
When you have completed your OV-2, the following types of information should be entered into your Integrated Dictionary (CV-2)
For each Operational Node: node name and description of the operational role played or mission performed; list of activities performed at the operational node
For each Needline: needline identifier, description, and nodes connected; summary of information exchanges associated with the needline, including the critical attributes for those information exchanges and the minimum, mean, and maximum requirements for those critical attributes
