1 Unit 8 Radicals

2 Square Roots and Simplifying Radicals

3 Radical Sign (square root sign)
Radicand Numbers or variables under the radical sign

4 Prime Numbers

5 Radicals are in SIMPLEST FORM when..
1. No perfect square factors other than 1 are under the radical. No fractions are under the radical. No radicals are in the denominator.

6 List some prime numbers.
You'll need to know how to prime factor to simplify square roots. If a radicand isn’t a perfect square, you’ll prime factor. List some prime numbers.

10 When you have a pair, bring the number out.
EX:1 Simplify. When you have a pair, bring the number out.

11 When you have a pair, bring the number out.
EX:2 Simplify When you have a pair, bring the number out.

12 EX:3

13 EX:4 Simplify.

14 You try!

15 Worksheet Simplifying Radicals

16 Add and Subtract Radicals
You can only add or subtract radicals that have the EXACT SAME radicand. Then add/subtract ONLY the number OUTSIDE the radical Then, check to see if you can simplify!!

17 Example 1

18 Example 2 Sometimes you have to simplify 1st then see if you can add.
