1 Title: Creed 2-7: God the Son - Deity Text: Philippians 2: Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. By: Pastor Micah Adamson May 6, 2018 Philippians 2:9-11 (NIV84) Title

2 Introduction: The Creeds are what we need to know and believe about Jesus in order to call on His name to be saved (Rom. 10). 12 statements organized by the 3 persons of the Trinity. God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are introduced in the first 3 statements. Today we’ll review the 6 statements about Jesus’ ministry.

6 Biblical precedents for Creeds:
1 Corinthians 15 = Covers Jesus’ death and resurrection. Matthew 28 = Includes all three members of the Trinity. Philippians 2 = Covers all of Jesus’ ministry and includes all three members of the Trinity. Paul uses this Creed to teach both doctrine about Jesus and practical Christian life (1 Tim. 4:16).

7 Philippians 2:1-5 (NIV84) 1 If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ [10. Baptism/Forgiveness], if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit [8. Spirit, 9. Church / Communion], if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:

8 Philippians 2:5-11 (NIV84) 5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, [2. Deity = Heaven] 7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. [3. Incarnation = Earth] 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death— even death on a cross! [4. Death = Under the Earth] 9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, [5. Resurrection, 6. Ascension] 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. [Isaiah 45:23] [7. Return, 1. Father]

9 Philippians 2:12-18 (NIV84) 12 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose. 14 Do everything without complaining or arguing, 15 so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe 16 as you hold out the word of life [11. Resurrection, 12. Eternal life]—in order that I may boast on the day of Christ [7. Return] that I did not run or labor for nothing. 17 But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering [4. Death] on the sacrifice and service [3. Incarnation] coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with all of you. 18 So you too should be glad and rejoice with me.

11 Philippians 2:5-11 (NIV84) - Revisited
5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, [2. Return, 1. Father]

12 What does it mean to call God “LORD” in the OT?
Exodus 3:13-15 (NIV84) 13 Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?” 14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” 15 God also said to Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The Lord, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation.

13 What does it mean to call Jesus “Lord” in the NT?
Dear Mr. Montgomery, I am afraid that my days of lecturing and traveling are over. Last July my death was hourly expected, and tho’ I didn’t get through the gate I have had to resign all my posts and settle down (not unhappily) to the life of an invalid. Your two lectures [the basis of the book History & Christianity] did me good and I shall constantly find them useful. Congratulations. The only criticism I’d venture is that you have possibly a little bit over-called the blow about [the Greek word] kyrios. Admittedly like [Latin] dominus and English Lord, it may represent JHVH [or YHWH]: but like them it can also mean a human superior. The vocative kyrie often needs to be translated ‘Sir’ rather than ‘Lord’. Otherwise I don’t think it could be bettered. Yours sincerely, C.S. Lewis

14 Ways of denying the Doctrine of the Trinity:
Non-Christian ways of denying the Trinity: Atheism: There is no God. Pagan Polytheism: There are lots of gods. Simple Monotheism: Only one God who is not a Trinity. Heretical Christian ways of denying the Trinity: Tritheism/Polytheism: Father, Son, Spirit = different gods. Modalism: God becomes the Father, Son, and Spirit. Arianism: Father is God, but Jesus and Spirit aren’t.

15 Ways of defending the Doctrine of the Trinity:
The Nicene Creed is an example of systematic / historical / practical theology, but is it biblical theology? My favorite way to defend the doctrine of the Trinity is from NT texts that apply OT texts to Jesus.

16 Work from one NT passage back to multiple OT passages: Who is the LORD God?
Matthew 21-22: Jesus taught the three elements of the doctrine of the Trinity from the OT in the NT. OT: There is only one God (Deuteronomy 6:4-5). OT/NT: The Father is God, the Christ is God, and the Holy Spirit is God (Psalm 110:1). NT: God doesn't change into the Father, Son, and Spirit (Matthew 3:16-17, 28:18-20).

17 Work from multiple NT passages to show how they apply one OT passage: Who is the LORD God?
Isaiah 45:21-23: Paul applied this NT passage as the definition of what “Jesus is Christ is Lord” means. NT: Romans 14:11 calls Jesus Lord and quotes Isaiah 45:23 to show that the LORD is our judge. NT: Philippians 2:11 calls Jesus Lord and quotes Isaiah 45:23 to show that Jesus is LORD. OT: Isaiah 45:23 says that there is only one God, the LORD who everyone will acknowledge as God at the final judgement. This is the name Paul applied to Jesus as LORD!

18 Romans 14:8-12 (NIV84) 8 If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. 9 For this very reason, Christ died [4] and returned to life [5] so that he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living. 10 You, then, why do you judge your brother? Or why do you look down on your brother? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat [7]. 11 It is written: “‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord [YHWH], ‘every knee will bow before me; every tongue will confess to God.’” [Isaiah 45:23] 12 So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.

19 Isaiah 45:21-23(NIV84) 21 Declare what is to be, present it— let them take counsel together. Who foretold this long ago, who declared it from the distant past? Was it not I, the LORD? And there is no God apart from Me, a righteous God and a Savior; there is none but Me. 22 “Turn to me and be saved, all you ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other. 23 By Myself I have sworn, My mouth has uttered in all integrity a word that will not be revoked: Before Me every knee will bow; by Me every tongue will swear.

20 Exodus 20:1-7 (NIV84) 1 And God spoke all these words: 2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 3 “You shall have no other gods before me. 4 “You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. 7 “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

21 Conclusion: It matters Jesus is the LORD God of the OT
Life: It’s appropriate for us to remember both the Law and the Gospel as we come to the Lord’s Table. Jesus’ life is as convicting as the Law. Doctrine: We have to believe in this LORD Jesus Christ and call on His name to be saved (Rom. 10:13). Jesus’ life provides us with righteousness. Philippians 3:8-9 (NIV84) 8 … I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith.
