2 Y6 EVOLUTION AND INHERITANCE
LESSON 1: HOW FOSSILS ARE MADE

3 What the fossil record is
Today you will learn How fossils are formed What the fossil record is

4 Starter question: WHAT IS A FOSSIL
Starter question: WHAT IS A FOSSIL? DISCUSS IT WITH THE PERSON NEXT TO YOU

5 FOSSILS ARE .. The remains or impression of a prehistoric plant or animal embedded in rock and preserved in petrified form.

6 4 types There are 4 different ways in which fossils are formed and these are called MOLD, CAST, TRACE AND TRUE FORM

7 A MOLD FOSSIL Made when a fossil dies and rots away, leaving a hard mold of its shape in the rock

8 A cast FOSSIL A mold fossil that has become filled with sediment that has turned to rock, to give a 3d copy of the original

9 A TRACE FOSSIL The marks left behind by a living things from the past, such as footprints, burrowing holes or scratches on tree bark

10 A TRUE FORM FOSSIL A fossil that preserves either all or part of the real organic material of the living thing. This can include parts of bone or teeth that are longer lasting than soft tissue.

11 What is the fossil record?
The fossil record is a term that describes the way that the fossils have layered over time in the ground

12 What is the fossil record?
This is important because the further down we dig, the further we go back into the past to discover more primitive life-forms.

13 What is the fossil record?
We need this to learn how animals have changed over time, which confirms Charles Darwin’s Theory of Evolution, which we will learn about in another lesson

14 Tell the person next to you ..
Learning check: Tell the person next to you .. How fossils are formed What the fossil record is
