3 Introduction Standardized format for research papers
Used in social sciences Provides format guidelines APA (American Psychological Association) style is a standardized format for research papers. APA style is used most often in the social sciences. The guidelines from the APA describe exactly how to format your title page, inside pages, reference page, and in-text citations. This tutorial provides and overview of APA style to help you understand what is required from you for your writing assignments in this course.

4 General guidelines Use 1-inch margins Double-space text
Use 8.5 x 11 paper if printing When writing a paper in APA format you will need to use 1 inch page margins on your paper. The paper will also need to be double spaced.

5 Title Page Include link to sample title page with detailed info: Highlight each thing as it’s read. Bring in callouts that point out: running head is flush left page number flush right. Title is centered and double-spaced. Maybe use guided image for this? Zoom in on image as reading sections The first page of your paper is the title page. It should contain the title of the paper, the author's name, and the institutional affiliation. At the top left is the running head, which is a shortened version of your title. The page number 1 should be in the top right corner. The running head and page number should be put into a header so they automatically appear on every page.

Use parenthetical in-text citations The abstract, used for a formal paper, is usually page 2. You can skip this section for a shorter academic paper. For the main body: Start with the essay title centered at the top of the page. Use the Tab key to indent the first line of each paragraph. Double-space the text with all sections following each other without a break. Do not use white space between paragraphs. Create parenthetical in-text citations to identify the sources used in the paper. Format tables and figures.

7 You will select a standard font
You will select a standard font. Times Roman or Verdana with a size of 10 or 12 are good choices. Other fonts such as Bradley hand or Lucida Calligraphy may look pretty, but they can be difficult to read.

8 Page Numbers The pages in your paper will need to be numbered. Consecutive page numbering should appear flush right in the upper right-hand corner of each page, including the manuscript title page

9 Headings To organize your paper, headings are necessary. APA using a unique system for headings and includes five different types. For shorter papers headings are not necessary. Remember to ask your instructor if there are any special instructions that they require. You can also refer to the APA manual for detailed specifics.

10 You reference page will be the last page in your paper
You reference page will be the last page in your paper. This will have the title “References” and list all the works used in the paper. When quoting or paraphrasing information from different sources in your paper, you need to give credit to the person who had the original thought. We will cover more details on this later in the tutorial.
