3 About FSF The Firefighters Support Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit organization whose primary mission is to develop, produce and distribute training programs to firefighters, EMTs, Search & Rescue personnel, and Emergency Management professionals. 5 Presenter Michael D. Finney is a 25-year veteran of the fire service, having served at all ranks from Firefighter to Chief. He currently serves as the CEO for the Open Fire Academy ( Mr. Finney serves as faculty for American Military University, Grand Canyon University, Fairleigh-Dickinson University, and Ivy Bridge College. He previously served as the Director of Public Safety Services for Great Oaks Institute of Technology and Career Development and the Fire Chief for the Village of Glendale, Ohio. Michael is also an adjunct instructor with the National Fire Academy for the "Fire Service Course Design" program. He has authored/edited several books and magazines in leadership and training for the fire service. v1

6 What This Program Is Fire scene communications is one of the most critical components of emergency response. In this program, we will define communication, explain the elements of communication, discuss some best practices, and effectively ensure that information is being disseminated. v1

It is a “two way” conversation Includes two or more people

10 What are some best practices
Before you key up the mic, listen Collect your thoughts before broadcasting Keep your transmission to brief, concise statements. Wait for confirmation from the other person. If reply is incorrect, notify immediately and transmit again.

11 Effectively ensuring information is disseminated
Stick to the basics… who, what, how, when, why Keep your message brief and concise Overcome cognitive dissonance Always receive confirmation message was correctly received Avoid slang or technical jargon Remember the listener may use other terminology than you use
