2 How to Pick a Book Have you ever wondered how to pick a book that matches your reading ability? The perfect place to answer this question is in the library and I am here to help you.

4 Think about what kind of book you would like to read?
a. Fiction or nonfiction? Pretend or Real

5 Think about what kind of book you would like to read?
b. Chapter book or picture book?

6 Find a book you think you might like to read.
Use a shelf marker to keep the place of the book when you pull it off the shelf.

7 Follow these steps 1. Read the title and the author.
2. Check the reading level.

Most books in the library are marked on the book spine with colored dots Reading Level Red Dot Orange Dot 1.0 – 1.9 Blue Dot – 2.9 Brown Dot 3.0 – 3.9 Black Dot – 4.9 Green Dot – 5.9 Yellow Dot 6.0 – 6.9 Pink Dot and up

9 Follow these steps Read the back cover. 4. Read a page with a lot of
words.

10 Flip through the book and read the first page using the five finger rule.

11 Start reading. Use your fingers to keep track of the words you don’t know. If you find five or more words that you don’t know on a page, put the book back in place.

12 Look for a book that has five or less words you don’t know on a page.
When you find one that you like to read and it’s the right reading level, then you are ready to check out the book.
