Take out the following: Your copy of the text (Frederick Douglass or Incidents… Your homework assignment (pre-work for The Trial of Linda Brent and Frederick Douglass Ms. Walker WILL check for Participation Points. 1) Take a look at the chart below 2) Read the sections that correspond to your team. 3) In your spiral notebook, write a 3-4 sentence response, about why you believe that section of the text relates to your argument. 3 Objective: I will learn how extract meaningful and relevant evidence from “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass” or "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl" by analyzing advanced words and phrases in order to support my claim. I will know I have mastered this when I am able to present strong evidence that supports my claim in the trial of Frederick Douglass or Linda Brent.

4 I Do: Trial Expectations
Everyone in the group is expected to participate Your group must include three pieces of evidence, directly quoted from the text. Each group must turn in a “court document,” that include the claim, textual evidence, ranking, and rationale about the claim. Each group will have 5 minutes to present!

5 I Do: Audience/Jury Expectations
You are to actively listen and take note of your classmates’ presentations Your exit ticket question will directly relate to the notes you take on the presentations You participation points for today are based on: Notes Jury duty: voting for the team you believe presented the best case. You will use your cell phones for voting, but they must ONLY be visible when an announcement is made by the judge to vote.

6 We Do: Partner Collaboration
With the people in your group, you have 15 minutes to prepare your court document Each court document should include: The text of the prompt/question Your team’s claim Three pieces of evidence from the text to support your claim Your analysis of the evidence you presented (rank and rationale)

8 Jury…Time to Vote! On your phones, type “37607” as the number of your text message recipient (free of charge!) Each person is expected to vote for ONE team.

9 Exit Ticket In your composition book, respond to the following question: Based on the evidence presented in the trial, do you side with the prosecution or the defense team for Frederick Douglass/Linda Brent? Provide a piece of evidence used by TWO of the teams in the trial to support your claim.

Extra credit if your example is designed for display on the timeline.

You have ONE minute to transition to your group/activity You should have your composition notebook BEFORE small group begins (grab it when you come in) If Ms. Walker is in teacher-led and you want to communicate me, it must be done through your group leader WRITE your question down, give it to your group leader. In most cases, it will be your responsibility to complete small group work outside of class if time runs out.
