1 BR: write 3 Academic resolutions you have for the new year!
Objectives: describe the importance of the cell theory The difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells The structure and function of cell organelles

2 Agenda 1. Cell Theory Notes 2. Cell theory video (short!)
3. Cell Structures notes 4. Paper Plate cell models-pg. 174 Closure will be posted during the last 15 minutes of class!

3 The Cell Theory SOL BIO 2a

4 The Cell Theory The development and refinement of magnifying lenses and light microscopes made the observation and description of microscopic organisms and living cells possible.

5 The Cell Theory Many scientists contributed to the cell theory

6 The Traditional Cell Theory
3 parts to the cell theory: 1. The cell is the basic unit of life 2. All living things are made of cells 3. Cells come from pre-existing cells

7 The Modern Cell Theory The following statements are added to form the Modern Cell Theory: Energy flow occurs within cells. Cells contain genetic material (DNA) that is passed from cell to cell during cell division. Cells have the same basic chemical composition in organisms of similar species.

8 Anton van Leeuwenheok (1632-1723)
He invented the first microscope. Dutch scientist who was the first to see bacteria and protists.

9 Leeuwenhoek’s Microscope

10 Robert Hooke ( ) He observed that cork has small regular boxes in it that he called “cells”.

11 Hooke’s cork cells

12 Robert Brown ( ) Scottish botanist who noticed that all cells have a dark region that he called a “nucleus”

13 Matthais Schleiden (plants) Theodor Schwann (animals)
Theodor Schwann and Matthais Schleiden stated that all living things are made of cells. (1839) Matthais Schleiden (plants) Theodor Schwann (animals)

14 Rudolph Virchow ( ) German scientist who discovered that all cells come from pre-existing cells.

15 The Cell Theory Continued advances in microscopy allowed observation of cell organelles and structure.

16 Electron Microscopes Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM): bounces electrons off of a whole gold-coated sample to create vivid 3-D images Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM): bounces electrons off of a sliced sample to create very detailed images
