October manifesto

Why did it begin? The October manifesto began because the people of Russia were outraged about the events that occurred on January 22nd 1905 also know as Bloody Sunday. By the end of the year, St Petersburg had been affected by many strikes and political agitation. On the first Sunday in March, an estimated 300,000 people had taken to the streets of the capital shouting out a variety of slogans. The most worrying for the authorities were “All power to the Soviets” while “God save the tsar and open his eyes to our wants” would have given the glimmer of hope that some of the people still demonstrated loyalty to Nicholas II.

A year of arbitrary arrests, strikes and political agitation did not go well for the government. By the end of 1905, Nicholas could not even depend on the loyalty of his military, The fact that men in the army had not been paid for three months hardly helped matters. In March 1905, Nicholas promised that he would authorise the convening of a duma. This was exactly what Nicholas had promised would not happen. tsar Nicholas ii had created a list of new laws that he promised to bring in. this made his army happy.

* The manifesto satisfied enough of the moderate participants in the revolution to weaken the forces against the government and allow the revolution to be crushed. Only then did the government formally fulfil the promises of the manifesto. * Once tsar Nicholas ii had the soldiers on his side he used them to calm down the streets of Russia. The tsar sent the soldiers to stop the strikes happening and the protesting.

Reforms. some of the reforms the tsar had promised include: * Civil liberties * Freedom of speech * Freedom of assembly - No laws were to be introduced without the agreement of the Duma.

Outcomes. Once Russia had settled down after bloody Sunday, and the strikes had ended Russia was back to normal. All the workers had gone back to work thinking the tsar would be brining in all these new and great laws but little did they know none of this was actually going to happen the tsar did however bring in some of these laws but not as he said he would. Eg: the people of Russia did get more of a say but if the tsar didn’t agree with them nothing would be done. So at the end of the day the tsar still had full control of Russia. The tsar had tricked the people of Russia into believing that they were getting what they wanted.
