1 Genetics & Heredity Lesson 5

2 Quick Review: Central Dogma
What is DNA? What are genes? What is mRNA? How does mRNA become protein? Take 2 minutes of private think time to remember the concept of Central Dogma (DNA -> RNA -> Protein). Pair and share for 1 minute each and then be prepared to share out with the class.

3 What Are We Made Of? The 4 major classes of biomolecules:
1. 2. 3. 4. Of these, which are encoded in our genes? 4 major classes: Proteins, Lipids, Carbohydrates, Nucleic Acids Encoded in our genes: Proteins, including enzymes

4 Nature vs Nurture In Work Space, work with your table partners to place a list of traits you think are: 1. Encoded in your DNA (Nature = Genetic) 2. Not encoded in your DNA (Nurture = Learned) 3. Not sure (because…) For each trait, you must include a “Why” statement to explain your reasoning To be proficient, your group must also include at least 3 additional traits not on the list 20-30 minutes of Work Space time Questions: What are your criteria for determining nature vs nurture? Did you discuss this as a group before starting the activity to achieve a consensus? How clear-cut are these traits? Why?

5 Debrief Nature Nurture
Enter class lists in the Power Point if student groups can support placement of traits on either category. Write “?” traits on the white board for further analysis.
