4 Charting the Classroom
How is land used in this classroom? Why do you think the classroom is set up this way? How could land be maximized by moving things around? If you were the teacher would your classroom be set up this way? Top half of page 8 I want you to split in half vertically and on the left side draw the way the class is set up and on the right the way you would set it up

5 Revolutionary Land After the revolution, America had to start over
Besides government (3 branches), religion (Baptist and Methodist), and education (UGA), land was the most important resource Georgia had to figure out a way to disperse the land that they acquired from the British after they gained independence

6 Giving out land The D.O.I states that all men have the right to own land The land of Georgia stretched to the Mississippi river The headright system was an approach that gave land to ex soldiers of the Revolutionary war (including Austin Dabney) Also this system gave land to any man who wanted it, more if you had a family or slaves Ultimately they would run out of land under this system

7 Yazoo Land Act (1795) Named after a river in Mississippi
The act sold much of the land of Georgia (present day Miss. and Al.) to four land companies for $500,000 The act was passed in the Georgia general assembly and signed into law by the governor Most of the citizens of Georgia were outraged

8 Yazoo Retaliation Eventually it came to light that many of the members of the legislature were bribed to sign the act Georgia’s US senator James Jackson was so mad about this that he quit his job in D.C. and returned to Georgia Jackson worked with his allies to overthrow the GGA and nullify the Yazoo land act Would later be named the Yazoo land fraud

9 Land Lottery System The final approach was called the land lottery system between This allowed for average Georgians to buy land for pennies on the dollar GA family names were put in one pot and the plot was put in the other ¾ of the land in Georgia was eventually given to 100,000 families in GA
