1 9 x 14 9 x 12 Calculate the value of the following: 1 8 × 12 =
Starter: Answer the questions below in your books Calculate the value of the following: 1 8 × 12 = (9 + 7) × 5 = (36 ÷ 3) × (42 – 19) = 11 × (24 ÷ 6) = 20 × 58 = 25 × 278 = 9 x 14 9 x 12

2 9 x 14 9 x 12 Mark your starter: 1 8 × 12 = 96 (9 + 7) × 5 = 80
Starter: Answer the questions below in your books Mark your starter: 1 8 × 12 = 96 (9 + 7) × 5 = 80 (36 ÷ 3) × (42 – 19) = 276 11 × (24 ÷ 6) = 44 20 × 58 = 1160 25 × 278 = 6950 9 x 14 9 x 12

3 Investigating Pascal’s Triangle
Consolidating all you have learned so far See if you can find a general pattern which will allow you to predict answers. Set your work out clearly. Include mathematical notation in explanations.

4 When you multiply numbers together, the answer you get is called the product.
If you find the product of those six numbers, you get an answer of 14,400. You can split this number into its factors (Remember that 3, 3, 4, 4, 10 and 10 will be factors of the number). If you continue to work this out, you can work out the prime factors of 14,400. In this case. You will get 26 × 32 × 52. You could split these prime factors into two equal piles giving you 23 × 3 × 5 in each pile. This means that 14,400 is a square number which has a square root of 120.

5 The answers are determined
by what you find out. When completing a mathematical investigation, you need to be really clear about what you want to say. You need to tell the person checking your work what you have done in a mathematical way. If you have used any formulae, you need to be clear what you have used. It is often useful to draw a diagram, which in this case might be the section of Pascal’s Triangle from which you draw your numbers. See if you can find a pattern to help you predict other answers.
